The University of Macerata (UNIMC), tracing its roots to 1290, is one of the oldest institutions in Italy and is highly specialised in socio-economic and human sciences. It has a long experience in EU projects. Three departments from UNIMC are involved in the project: the Department of Political Sciences, International Relations and Communication, the Department of Business and Law and the Department of Education, Cultural Heritiage and Tourism. All departments have high expertise in research on CSR and have carried out several projects on CSR issues, tackling them from both a business ethics perspective and a policy-related one.

CECIMO is the European Association of the Machine Tools Industry, and represents the common interests of the European machine tools industry. It centralises the activities, projects and objectives of the European machine tools manufacturers, which represent over 40% of the world production. CECIMO has an acknowledged representative function with supranational organisations and maintains a permanent contact/liaison with the European Commission. Its members are 15 European national associations representing interest of machine tools builders. The participation of CECIMO is particularly relevant to the project, because it means the involvement of European-wide sector-based business federations that is a key channel of communication with MTS enterprises, and qualified to communicate – through its national sectorial association about CSR in a way that is relevant and understandable to them.

The University of Nottingham (UNOTT), tracing its roots to 1881, is one of the oldest and largest institutions of British higher education, ranked in the top 100 Universities of the World. Two departments from the University of Nottingham are involved in this project – the Nottingham University Business School including the internationally renowned International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR), and the Institute of Work, Health and Organisations (I-WHO). ICCSR is a signatory to the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (UN PRME) and institutional member of the global Academy of Business in Society (ABIS). Both the Business School and I-WHO have experiences considerable success in attracting funding from the European Commission, working in collaboration with many other leading research institutions across the EU.

CSR Europe is the leading European business network for corporate social responsibility with around 70 multinational companies and 37 national partner organisations as members. In total, the network reaches out to more than 3000 companies throughout Europe. In October 2010, CSR Europe launched a joint Enterprise 2020 initiative to address societal challenges through collaborative action and shape the business contribution to the EU’s Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Since its launch, Enterprise 2020 has become the reference initiative for the ideal company of the future and forms the umbrella for all CSR Europe activities. Given the high expertise of CSR Europe in CSR knowledge, implementation and diffusion, its involvement is very strategic for the project.

The Central European Initiative (CEI) is the oldest and largest regional initiative comprising 18 member States of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Since 1989, the CEI has successfully adapted to major historical changes in Europe and has become a champion of regional cooperation for European integration. Since 2004, the CEI has been developing specific expertise in the management and implementation of many project financed or co-finances by the EU under various funding programmes. The participation of CEI is very important for the project because it ensures the involvement of public authorities, especially from Eastern Europe and other EIP participating countries, where the pressure from public authorities on CSR has till now been fairly low.
